7 Essential Steps for Washing Clip-In Hair Extensions
Maintaining the cleanliness of your clip-in hair extensions is crucial for preserving their healthy, natural appearance. Whether you have human hair or synthetic clip-ins with any texture, mastering the correct washing procedure is the foundation of their upkeep.
Below is a detailed, step-by-step guide to washing your clip-in hair extensions, ensuring they stay fresh and pristine:
Step 1: Remove the Clip-In Hair Extensions
Although it might seem like a time-saver, washing your hair while the clip-ins are still attached is not advisable. The movement of your hands combined with the weight of wet extensions can cause your natural hair to become tangled in the clips, leading to avoidable damage.
Step 2: Brush the Extensions Thoroughly
Use a durable brush to gently work out any clumps, knots, or tangles. You can either detangle dry extensions with your fingers or slightly dampen them with a detangling product to more easily loosen stiff, matted areas.
Step 3: Prepare the Water
For best results, wash both synthetic and human hair clip-ins in cool water. Fill a sink or place a large, non-slip bowl or container on a flat surface and fill it with the appropriate amount of water.
Step 4: Add Shampoo
Add a few drops of shampoo to the water. For 100% human hair extensions, you can use your regular shampoo or a moisturizing or color-protecting formula (ideal for dyed hair). Synthetic extensions, however, require clarifying shampoos: moisturizing formulas can weigh them down, resulting in a greasy or sticky texture.
Step 5: Wash Gently
Swirl the extensions in the soapy water to remove residue, dirt, and debris. Drain the dirty water, refill the container with clean cool water, and repeat the process (there's no need to add shampoo again—this step is for rinsing and ensuring a thorough clean).Note: The original instruction suggested adding shampoo twice, which is typically unnecessary. Shampoo is usually used only once; subsequent rinses should be with clean water to avoid product buildup.
Step 6: Rinse Thoroughly
Hold the extensions under cool running water and gently massage them to remove all traces of shampoo. Continue rinsing until the water runs clear and no bubbles are left.
Step 7: Dry Properly
Lightly squeeze out excess water (do not wring or twist them) and pat dry with a towel. Allow the extensions to air-dry on a flat surface or a wig stand to maintain their shape and structure.
By following these steps, your clip-in hair extensions will remain clean, soft, and natural-looking, extending their lifespan and enhancing their beauty for prolonged use.Â
