A 6-Step Easy Guide to Removing Clip-In Hair Extensions
Clip-In Hair Extensions Removal Guide
Clip-in hair extensions are among the easiest type to remove, but there is still a right and a wrong way to do it. Removing them incorrectly could risk damaging your natural hair, while proper removal ensures your hair stays in great condition for years. Follow these 6 simple steps to safely remove your clip-ins, preserving both your hair and the extensions for every wear.
Step 1: Detangle Your Hair
Ensure your hair is completely tangle-free before starting. If it’s matted, tangled, or stiff from products like holding sprays or gels, take time to soften and detangle first. Apply a detangling product or mist both your hair and the extensions with water. Gently work through knots using your fingers, a brush, or a large-toothed comb to remove product buildup and smooth tangled areas.
Step 2: Section Your Hair
Create a part just above where the clip-ins are attached to expose the attachment points. For easier removal, you can also part the hair just below the extensions to access the clips more clearly.
Step 3: Remove the Clip-Ins
Use one hand to hold your natural hair securely at the roots. With the other hand, gently lift each clip upward and slide it out of your hair. Avoid pulling or yanking to prevent snagging.Â
Step 4: Detangle the Extensions
After removal, inspect the clip-ins for knots or tangles. Use a wide-toothed comb, brush, or your fingers—along with a detangling spray if needed—to gently remove any knots, starting from the ends and working upward.
Step 5: Dry the Extensions
If the extensions are damp from detangling, dry them with a hairdryer on a low, cool setting or let them air dry naturally. Avoid direct heat or sunlight, which can damage the fibers.
Step 6: Proper Storage
Store your clean, dry clip-ins in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight (to prevent color fading). Return them to their original packaging for best shape retention, or use a spacious box that accommodates their full length without bending or crushing the hair.
By following these steps, you’ll maintain the quality of both your natural hair and your clip-in extensions, ensuring they look beautiful every time you wear them.
