How To Wash Your Hair Extensions?

Washing hair extensions can be a little tricky because you have all this extra hair—such as sew-in hair extensions, tape-in hair extensions, or pre-bonded hair extensions. Here are a few quick tips for you.

  1. Limit Washing Frequency  The first thing to keep in mind is that you don't want to wash your hair too frequently. Try to train your scalp to need washing less often, ideally every other day or every three days. Fewer washes help maintain the integrity of the extensions and your natural hair.
  2. Detangle Before Washing  Another crucial step is to remove all tangles before washing. If your hair or extensions is quite tangled, gently comb it out with a wide-tooth comb or a brush designed for extensions before stepping into the shower. This prevents excessive tangling during the washing process.
  3. Avoid Scrubbing Attachment Points  No matter what type of extensions you have—fusion, weft, tape, micro ring, etc.—avoid scrubbing directly at the attachment points where the extensions connect to your natural hair. Whether it's glue, tape, or metal rings, aggressive scrubbing can loosen the bonds and cause shedding.
  4. Proper Washing Posture  When ready to wash, stand upright in the shower—don't flip your head upside down. This posture minimizes tangling and makes it easier to handle the hair. Start by wetting your hair thoroughly.
  5. Focus Shampoo on the Scalp  Apply a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo to your hands you may need a bit more than usual due to the extra hair. Massage the shampoo only into your scalp and root area—this is where oil and dirt accumulate. Extensions themselves don't produce oils, so there's no need to scrub the mid-lengths or ends. Rinse the shampoo, letting the lather run through the extensions gently as you rinse.
  6. Condition Mid-Lengths and Ends (Avoid Bonds)  For conditioner, skip the attachment points entirely—conditioner can weaken adhesives or cause tapes/rings to slip. Apply conditioner generously from the mid-lengths to the ends of the hair, focusing on maintaining moisture and shine in the extensions. Leave it on for a minute or two, then rinse thoroughly to remove any residue which can cause itchiness or buildup.
  7. Drying Best Practices  After showering, resist the urge to wrap your hair in a tight towel or rub it vigorously. Instead, gently pat the hair dry with a soft towel to remove excess water. Once semi-dry, apply a high-quality leave-in conditioner avoiding bonds to the mid-lengths and ends, then carefully comb through with a wide-tooth comb.
  8. Dry Promptly, Especially for Fusion Extensions  It's critical to dry your hair soon after washing—especially if you have fusion extensions, where prolonged moisture can weaken the glue bonds. Use a blow dryer on a low-heat setting, starting with the roots to prevent them from staying saturated. If you can't dry the entire head, at least ensure the roots are mostly dry to avoid damage or odor.

By following these steps, you'll keep your hair extensions clean, tangle-free, and long-lasting while protecting both the extensions and your natural hair.
